backyard

Where I grew up (small Island between Vancouver Island and the Mainland), my backyard was a forest.  Trails and Trees.  There was no such thing as a fully fenced yard.  My grandparents lived next door and there was a well traveled path to their house.  My grandfather built me a tree house ( literally), with a door, windows that open and shut ( and had planter boxes underneath them), bunk beds  and a shingle roof.  It was set up into the trees and he made stairs that led to it.  That old tree house was still there a few years back although not in use anymore ( the stairs had been removed).  It had fallen into disrepair.  When we leave this place, we leave behind Alyra's playhouse that John and my dad put together.  There is no way to move it so it will stay here.  I hope that maybe the family that rents our place (new owners intent) will have a family that will enjoy it as much as we have.  It makes me think of my grandfather and the little house in the trees that I left behind when we moved to Powell River.
