I used to sing…I was in Chamber Choir and our large choir
during High School. We traveled to the States to sing at various events ( San Francisco). It was great to hear the sounds and harmonies
that would come from a song. My friends
and I would sing around the campfire in the summer time at various cabins. My home town is known for a very large choral
festival and I would often volunteer to be an usher or a stage hand. When I
left and made the big leap to University, I lost that music (except for the
occasional duet with a friend on late night walks in downtown Victoria). It
wasn’t until my fourth year of my pretty busy Biochemistry degree that I heard
about UBC’s Choral Union. There wasn’t
many of us “science” types involved because of the heaviness of our lab
schedules, but I auditioned. I had a few
extra hours free between my classes and it fit in with the practice times of
the choir. I would journey to the other
side of campus to the music building and I would leave all my cares
behind. Music has such an amazing
ability to make everything else disappear.
We performed a number of times and even sang at the Orpheum Theatre
downtown. It was a great feeling.
Since then most of my singing is to music in the car or in
front of the TV to glee songs. I miss
it. I’ve often told myself I should find
a choir to join. But life is a bit busy
as it is and I don’t have the time at the moment. Sometimes I think about helping out our Choir
teacher at the school but then again I’m pretty busy helping my students figure
out Math. I occasionally put my music on
in my classroom as the students work on their homework and they occasionally catch
me singing along…blush! I'm pretty sure they don't know the words to Ave Maria so it's all good.
