My Great Grandmother baked, my grandmother baked…my mom
baked ( although not all that often). I
bake. My grandmother taught me to bake
when I was very little. I use to sit on
the counter, measure and stir and eat all the baked goods. Raw Dough…and I’m still around to tell the
tale. I was the only granddaughter on
that side of the family. My Nanie taught
me all that I know. I use my hands quite
often to stir my dough ( something my mom hated as she doesn’t like goo on her
hands). Most of the recipes I use were
my great grandmothers or my nanies and they are ones that the kids and family
adore.
I have fond memories of my grandmother coming to stay for a
week and baking icecream buckets full of cookies and treats to last us until
the next time she visited. When we
visited her there was no shortage of desserts.
I chuckle as I tell my mom she’s going to have to take up baking when
she retires and she can teach the kids to bake…she laughs too. She says she’s not that type of Grandma…she’s
a shopping Grandma. She can teach the
kids to shop. I guess it will be up to
me to teach the kids to bake.
When my grandmother passed way, I got her rolling pin and
many of her baking things from her kitchen.
This year I’m hoping to make one of her all time favorite holiday
treat…cherry cake. It requires a whole
lot of cherries and a whole lot of love.
I have not ever tried to make it.
I kinda assumed she would be around forever. Last year was our first holiday season
without her so I just didn’t have the heart to take on that recipe but this
year I think she would be proud. I think
she would love my new kitchen and be excited about me baking our family holiday
treats. So when work ends on the 21st,
I’m going to tackle Cherrie Cake, Ryan style.
It may not be the same as my Nanie’s but I’m sure going to try.
